Martin was born November 15, 1958, to Lester and Patricia Ellen (Sparks) Lambertus in Emmetsburg, IA. Martin grew up in Emmetsburg, graduating from Emmetsburg High School in 1977. After high school, Martin entered the Army and eventually went into the Navy.
