Remember: each bucket with water provides 250 water for your NPCs. Each adult (or old) villager needs 30 water each day, so one single bucket can feed a single villager 8 days, or 8 villagers 1 day. I don't know how many people currently live in your settlement. Let's say you have 40 villagers, so you'll need 1200 water per day (40x30).

Since you have clear line of sight in the water, it's very easy to sit on the shore and spot them. They aren't all over the place. I have yet to figure out where the pike are but I admit I haven't looked hard.1 Worker @ smithy: Iron tools. 1 Worker @ Barn: flax - straw.
